Anniversary at a West Coast Safari

Cycling ’74 began developing and selling software officially in late 1997, and it was in 1998 that the company incorporated and hired its first few employees. To celebrate ten years of our continued existence, we decided to have an anniversary party. Since the employees and consultants are spread over a few continents, the timing had to be just right to include the most people possible. After AES in San Francisco this year seemed to be an opportune time, and following are a handful of photos and details from the event that you will hopefully find amusing. Other details will be kept to ourselves as a basic self-preservation effort.

Safari West is a small preserve featuring African animals tucked in between the spas of Calistoga and the vineyards of Santa Rosa. Amazingly, you don’t notice those neighbors while visiting.

You get the best views of the animals while riding around in the double-decker Jeep and from the canvas cabins in which you sleep.

How often do you get to drink a glass of wine on your porch and watch giraffes mill around?

Other memorable safari moments include feeding giant catfish raw chicken parts after dark which feels like a scene from the movie Piranha, watching animals that are just a few days old hang out with their new herd, and seeing animals that have become famous thanks to youtube and people avoiding doing something meaningful. We didn’t go without simple pleasures like roasting marshmallows at the fire pit.

The “leader hat” presented to David Z. was definitely a highlight, as was a secret photo session which will be revealed on our website in December just in time for the holidays.

Couple those activities with a group of people who work very hard and don’t get to see each other very often, and the result was the best anniversary party one could imagine.
