Thanks Robert, wow the real Robert Henke, im blushing!

Yes i am fully aware and able to change [buffer] and [data] references inside [gen~] using a message, that is covered in the gen help patch. (I try not to ask questions answered by help patches!)

my question is whether there is a way to change buffer references in sync with a [sah] object inside of [gen~]…

my example below does so using two [buffer] objects and a gate…

can it be done with one?… probably not because [gen~] can’t really store text based data only signal and matrix information…. oh well… :)

thanks.

Hi there,

I’ve been getting into FFT processing again lately and would like to migrate most of the processes to Gen~ for flexibility.
The only object that is stopping me from doing this at the moment is vectral~.

Would it be possible to build something like this in gen~?
Has anyone done it before?
What would be the best way of going about it?

I understand how to smooth data in the time domain in gen~ but can’t conceptualise how to go about doing this for fft frames.

Thanks.

I was wondering as the GEN objects are implemented as some kind of stream processing technique, does it use the advantages of different CPU cores (i guess jit.gl.pix for sure on GPU)?

Hello

Patching with Gen in this hi level is new to me, i need help.

I like this:

http://creativejs.com/2012/01/little-planet-street-view/

http://www.subblue.com/blog/2010/6/17/little_planets

There is a interactive online website you can check it self, its very funny but you
need a browser with WebGL support -> Firefox.

http://notlion.github.io/streetview-stereographic/

The basic is a 360° sphere panorama picture. ( http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kugelpanorama )

Can someone tell me how i can make this “Little Planets” in gen?

Here is the GLSL shader code from the website(you can find this in the left top, press +):
_________________________________________________________________________
precision mediump float;

uniform sampler2D texture;
uniform float scale, aspect, time;
uniform mat3 transform;

varying vec2 v_texcoord;

#define PI 3.141592653589793

void main(){
vec2 rads = vec2(PI * 2., PI);

 vec2 pnt = (v_texcoord – .5) * vec2(scale, scale * aspect);

 // Project to Sphere
float x2y2 = pnt.x * pnt.x + pnt.y * pnt.y;
vec3 sphere_pnt = vec3(2. * pnt, x2y2 – 1.) / (x2y2 + 1.);
sphere_pnt *= transform;

 // Convert to Spherical Coordinates
float r = length(sphere_pnt);
float lon = atan(sphere_pnt.y, sphere_pnt.x);
float lat = acos(sphere_pnt.z / r);

 gl_FragColor = texture2D(texture, vec2(lon, lat) / rads);
}
_________________________________________________________________________

(Sorry if my english not good, i am better in german)

Many thanks for the support and have a nice day

Suddenly i became the secret little spy of Native Instruments.. But this was not my intention..Because gen is a brave new world for doing “expert things” like CPHAS said without living the comfort of traditional MAX. After all gen is used more and more inside prepared patches like Granulator II from Monolake

Gen is an add on to Max that allows you to use a similar programming environment to produce low level functions. Basically using gen you can write your own advanced objects without necessarily having to delve into C etc. For example using gen~ you can write devices that filter using sample based delays and feedback which is impossible within Max. Gen is not an alternative to Max though you must have a full Max 6 license to use Gen.

Hy,

I have a noob question about gen~

I’ve rad a lot about this, but still don’t know what is this exactly.

For example : if I replace the inlets and outlets in my patchers to ins and outs, and put the patch into a gen~, it would be faster?

Can I use gen with Live API?

hi, after several month i restarted gen programming. but i cannot open any gen~ patches, even example patches provided by cycling74. unlike ‘normal’ crash it crashes without putting any dialog. unfortunately i don’t remember what i did to my environment but other patches run just normally.
is there anybody have same problem? or have the solution?

Macbook Pro OSX 10.8.3

it’s all the gen operators that you can write inside the codebox. There are a few syntax changes between the boxed and the code versions of each operator, if you’re unsure how the syntaxe changes, you can try (inside a gen subwindow) opening the sidebar, displaying the current gen patcher codebox, and making a simple gen patcher with the operator boxes you want.

Its poorly documented but everything you can do with gen you can do with the codebox. I’ve been trying to learn to use gen over the past week or two and have the same frustrations. The GenExpr vignette has some information.

If you have the latest version of Max you can quickly sketch something out with objects in gen and the “code” sidebar will show you the syntax, then you can use bits of that in codebox.

Obviously nothing is perfect, but removing an OS layer and working with straight code (max or otherwise) makes for less potential complications.

When I started off I did envision a frozen mac mini setup, and perhaps one day, but as it is I’m really pushing the limit of my regular laptop, so we’ll see how that goes.

Rodrigo; if you black box something like a mac mini, you don’t let it do software updates – you retain a super-closed system that will always revert to a single state when power-cycled.

Also; I’ve seen pedal boards crash. Crash hard, in fact, where you’d need to short out an internal battery and whatnot. That stuff is torture. And I’ve seen Elektron Machinedrums and octatracks crash, too. And I know I’ve crashed a Kurzweil k2000r and a yamaha a5000 on a number of occasions… I guess my point is: Software will always be software, regardless of where you’re at.

@Frank-N: I think you’d need a bit more than 1 meg of ram to run Max on that pedal ;) My tiny little patch I’m working on right now takes up 280 megabytes… Also, my laptop is roughly 15 times faster than the processor on there, etc. etc.

Between this and all the linux mini computers it definitely makes the ‘grass look greener’ as a Max user.

Yeah a laptop/controller can do a lot, but software/system updates break things, things can crash, etc… The ability to fully ‘black box’ a stable patch/code/effect/idea would be invaluable…

Well, I have a max powered stomp box, but there is a computer attached to it…;-)
I think a SoftStep + a Macbook Air is much more convenient than a little stomp box which you would have to attach to a computer anyway as soon as you want to change the function inside of it…
I have never seen a guitar player (or other stompbox addict) with only one stompbox, unless it was one of those multifunction monster foot boards. All of this more expensive and more heavy than a computer…
Granted, stompboxes do help to concentrate on one thing, but you can have that with more flexibility as well. Its simply a matter of discipline. My Max based instrument didn’t change in its principal way of playing it since the nineties, when it was purely based on Midi and a rack full of closed boxes (nothing to stomp on though). Yesterday I arrived in New York with just hand luggage. Last time I was here I had a rack of 16 HE…
I sure never want to go back ever…
