Hello, wondering if anyone has a sense of ease of use/performance of the standard gaming Kinect and the “Microsoft Kinect for Windows Sensor.”
Also curious whether certain generations of the Kinect are more Max 6.1+ friendly
I am planning to start Kinect/Max patching.
Especially of interest is the ability to work in both Windows and OSx environments, so compatibility with the OSx build of jit.openni is essential.
Many thanks!

The Department of Music at Goldsmiths are running intensive four-day MaxMSP summer courses designed for anyone working with sound in a creative way, or to expand your fundamental knowledge of the MaxMSP programming environment.

Introductory Courses (4 day course, 10am-6pm; Either 13, 14, 20, 21 July 2013 or 16-19 July 2013 inclusive)
The Max Introductory Courses are designed for anyone working with sound in a creative way, and who wants to expand into the world of custom built innovative software that MaxMSP makes possible.
The focus of the course will be on the creative applications of MaxMSP, and on reaching a level of technical understanding and competence as quickly as possible in order that creative activities can begin.
The introductory course sets out to provide participants with a secure set of technical and creative skills that will let them use MaxMSP to explore all of these areas.

Advanced Course (4 day course, 10am-6pm, 23-26 July inclusive)
While a fundamental knowledge and familiarity with the software is assumed to build simple creative patches, the participants will be introduced to more specific and underlying topics in data handling and manipulation in order to facilitate more complex programming projects. This course will cover a variety of topics including midi/data controls, sampling techniques and manipulation (live sampling, looping), real-time effects, granulation, audio analysis, FFT, sensors (Arduino) and video analysis and manipulation. The course material has been carefully compiled to highlight the similarities and differences between the different topics in order to allow the participant to quickly acquire the skills to embark on their own more ambitious programming projects.

Past participants on the course have included performers, sound artists, composers, visual artists, teachers and students, with a huge range of different musical, visual and general artistic backgrounds. It is generally helpful for participants to have had some prior experience in using computer technology for artistic creation, but no prior experience of using MaxMSP is needed for the Introductory Course.

For further information including course dates and fees, please visit the Music Short Courses website (http://www.gold.ac.uk/short-courses/music/max-msp-summer-school/), or call the Music Office on +44 (0)20 7919 7640.

Well, but with that isn’t also the list lenght at random every time i add a number?

The solution posted by Mzed is perfect for what i want.

Now, i’m continuing my work but i’ve got another number.

For example, you know the “Simon”, right? (It’s good for my example)
Suppose that i want to send the number to the corresponding led, and after the program read all the list, i must insert by pressing buttons (take 4 as example, just like Simon) the corresponding sequence (and return wrong when i made an error).

What i must use? I’ve read that probably Zl Nth could be useful, but personally i’ve never use that.

Zl join is fine for joining lists, but I prefer zl group (with no arguments!!!) for making arbitrary lists. It’s a lot simpler:

Send whatever numbers/symbols you want, then send a bang to output the list.

Just be sure to not specify a list size as an argument.

Hello all,

My patch utilizes the serial object to communicate with an external device. The patch was developed on OS 10.6.8 and Max 6.0.4 and it works very well there.
On a much faster OS 10.8 Mac Mini it’s garbage. The message/ack cycle has gotten very slow and inconsistent rendering my patch useless. It’s the same Max version, same serial drivers, no 3rd party objects.

Normally I send messages with a 33ms metro, the device responds with an ACK very quickly, and the next message goes out 33ms later without a glitch.
On 10.8, it’s randomly anywhere between 33ms and 150ms, obviously choking hard on something.

I just updated everything, latest keyspan drivers for 10.8, latest Max6.1, and there is no change.

Anybody have a similar experience?

I have the same problem. I always get “ad_rewire: error starting audio. Is ReWire mixer running?” when i try to enable the audio.

I use the latest version of max msp and reason 6.5 on Lion OSX. I reinstalled max and reason, tried 32 as 64 bit versions, deleted the rewire directory and reinstalled it, symbolic link, … no success.

I tried the patch from max helper as patches of the
ReWire Essentials, Part Two page, but same errors.

Is rewire buggy in max msp ?

Hi, i’m trying to create a list of random numbers with Zl Join.
Theorically i must create a list with the last generate number and the list himself, and after that i probably need a “zl rev” to have the correct order.

The only thing is that i’m not really praticed with Zl and the output of zl is nothing, anyone can post an example of that, thanks?

Hi TERENCEFORMER,
Thanks a lot for the patch man. It’s a big help. I like the “p averaging” and “p scaling” sub-patches a lot.
Still wondering how i’m going to get a fluid control of video with jittery wii data. It might be fine with graphics or abstract shapes, but I suspect if I use it to control the playback speed of video it will be too confusing. I might try using the wii data to send a bang, in turn gradually speeding up the video momentarily. Hmmmm.

Thanks!

I found the problem: Some pattr object inside of bpatchers renamed themselves after re-loading the whole patcher. The problem vanished by leaving out the patchers an giving the recallable uis a scripting name (using autopattr). Seems like this works way better than pattrobjects, especially when you need to set priorities. I would really like to know, why those pattrs changed their names. COuldn’t find a reason for that in the forum. As long as the program was running they kept their names and everything was saved and ready to recall. That just threw me off …

can anyone aide me in creating an abstraction that has the same functionality?

For a piece of code to be an abstraction it must have some way with communicating/interacting with objects outside of it, e.g. inlets/outlets.
To have the same functionality as [routepass] it must have at least one definable selector (using arguments or with a ‘set’ message) and be able to pass unmatched messages (unchanged) out the right outlet.

The other solutions here may work for very specific scenarios, but they do not satisfy OP’s criteria. I will admit that my solution is also limited (to a single selector), but one can still perform the exact same function as [routepass] by linking several of them together.

*EDIT: fixed a couple things in my previous code…
<code>
