Max for Live workshop by Danny de Graan & Robert Henke
This workshop consists of 2 parts: 4 days of in-depth classes on Max for Live by Dutch composer and Max expert Danny de Graan and a 5th day with Robert Henke (aka Monolake) talking about some of the M4L devices he has built for personal use and discussing why it could make sense - or not - to create personal patches in M4L.

Part one (Aug 30 - Sept 2) by Danny de Graan
Have you ever missed that special feature in Ableton Live? Always wanted to build a random drum manipulator tool? Always dreamed of a unique live processing effect in your DAW? Do you want to control Live as a musical instrument? Learn to do this with Max for Live!
This workshop deals with all these subjects and more. The workshop is specially designed for beginners using Max for Live. The goal of the workshop is to learn how to build instruments, audio effects of midi tools in Max for Live. At the end of the 4 days, the participants will have the chance to present what they have built during the workshop.
The following subjects will be addressed:
Basics of Max/MSP
Digital audio
Midi
M4L communication
GUI design (building a user-interface)
External controllers (WII remote, Akai APC20/40, Novation Launchpad, Monome)
Subjects by the Participants
Participants need to bring their own PC or Mac laptop computer (a limited number is available at STEIM, please indicate if you need this). This laptop should have the latest version of Ableton Live and Max for Live installed. It is advised to learn the Max/MSP tutorials before attending the workshop.
This part of the workshop will be daily from 10-17h with a break at 13h.
Part two (Sept 3) by Robert Henke
Robert Henke is a Max user since 1992, and one of the authors of the Ableton Live software. In his workshop at STEIM he'll discuss the usage of MAX / MAX4Live in his own projects and will provide insights into the concept of MAX4Live and strategies for building own devices with it. He will question if and when it can make sense to spend time writing own patches in Max, and when it will be better to simply use what is already there. The workshop will also contain a critical review of own projects in the light of these questions. Since Robert Henke is an enthousiastic live performer, he'll also will discuss questions of control and interaction using Live and Max in conjunction with hardware controllers, and concepts of how to manage and create complexity in a performance situation, and how and why this can also be useful in a more general music creation process.
On Thursday Sept 2 Robert Henke will perform a multichannel concert based on transformations of field recordings he made in 2009 in the city of Hanoi / Vietnam, called 'Intersections'.
This workshop will be from 10-15h with a break at 13h.
