Im wondering whether it's best practice to use series for an 8band EQ using 8 biquads?

Currently in series, the volume increases for each biquad that the audio is sent through. Should I be reducing the volume after each biquad?

EQs are in series usually. Level issues may arise with Q or topology. I think there is a max example of this somewhere in the distro. But sounds like you are going about it in the right way. Maybe post a patch?

Yeah, I thought series was the right way to go. I dont seem to get much happening at all when in parallel. I ended up reducing the output of each biquad by 2db. It seems to fix the problem for now :/
