A couple newbie questions

Hi all,

I’m totally new to Max and kind of love it already. I went through a bunch of tutorials, downloaded the SDK, built the examples, and have managed to write a couple simple externals. (I’m not new to C.) I’ve started on a jitter external and so far, so good. I’m not hung up on anything, but I do have a couple questions…

Most of the jit examples use the “legacy” functions for constructing objects with setup() rather than with class_new(). The docs don’t seem to cover the new functions (like max_jit_object_alloc) yet so I assume they are rather recent. How much backward compatibility am I sacrificing by doing it the new way?

I’ve seen a few references to “Writing Max Externals” but there’s never a link and Google hasn’t helped me find the document itself. Is it available? (I did find and peruse “Writing Max Externals in Java” which isn’t very relevant to writing them in C.)

Other than this forum, the SDK docs, and the source code are there any resources you would recommend to an experienced programmer new to Max (and primarily interested in writing externals)? I’d like to get over the learning curve as quickly as possible and much of the material out there looks like it is rather basic and/or out-of-date, so sifting through it has been a chore.

Kind regards,
-j

Hi,

1. I’m collecting basic examples for newbies ( https://github.com/nicolasdanet/Flop ).
2. I often have a look in sources of Jamoma ( https://github.com/jamoma/Jamoma ).
3. And sometimes ( https://github.com/tap/TapTools ).
4. ( http://jmpelletier.com/cvjit/ ) for Jitter ?

Thanks much, Nicolas. Some of that should prove pretty helpful.
