A dirty word

I was going through the autopttr references and could not under stand this one. If some one can explain this to me I would be grateful, since I’m not sure what the dirty word means ;)

“The word dirty, followed by a 1 or 0, enables or disables the patcher-dirty flag. The default is 0 (disabled). When enabled, the autopattr object will dirty the patch whenever its state changes.”

What does it mean to dirty a patch in this context?

You should see this in relation to the shower message. No, seriously, in this case changing presets will be able to affect the state of the patch as if it had been edited, and therefor the user will be asked to save the patch upon close. Dirty in this case means: something has changed. Saving it is cleaning.
