Advice wanted: max <-> max5 ???

Hi all,

I’ve been casually playing around with max for a while, never really did anything with it because of lack of time and focus. I now have the time and focus and several projects in mind.

I fully intend to upgrade to max5 at some point, but traditionally I wait a while until more brave, experienced souls have recognized and reported some of the more obvious (to them) bugs.

However, m5 seems a huge leap forward in terms of the interface and workflow. Also, I’m not sure how much will be incompatible between the current version and m5.

So, what’s the consensus, should an essentially new max user starting a new set of projects just go ahead and do m5, or should I start with the current version and worry about upgrading/migrating later?

if you’re a new max user, don’t ever go to 4. start straight from version 5. even the relatively old and crusty of us are finding that 5 brings speed improvements along with usability and appearance improvements. you’ve come to max at the right time.

You could always work in Max4 for a while and periodically test in
Max5 until you get a feel for it.

Personally, I’d make the jump, since on balance Max5 cleans up more
issues than are likely to still be in the release after months of
intensive beta testing.

… assuming you’re not wanting to make plug-ins.

Just start in 5. I see no reason to start in 4 now unless you have projects that you started in 4 and want to make sure nothing breaks.

If you are new to Max, there is no reason to use Max 4. Start your journey from the new version.

5! 5! 5!

I’ve been using Max since before it was a product. (no brag, just fact)

If I was in your shoes, I would start with Max 5. I think that Max 5
is _so_ much easier to use, and _so_ much easier to learn than
previous versions, that your time will be much better spent there.

Wow…that’s pretty overwhelming consensus (and I know from years of lurking that it comes from some real veterens).

Thanks for the advice,

Speaking of plugins, has a timeframe for pluggo been laid out? It would be nice seeing the new interface in plugins.

I started using Max about 6 months ago. My plan is to try to do the under the hood stuff in 4.6.3 (in case I decide I want to make a plugin out of something) and the fancy interface stuff in 5 for now. There’s some tiny things in 4 I’ll miss, but I think it might just be a matter of getting used to the 5 interface/workflow since most the things I miss have a new way of doing it.

or want to use pluggos in vst~, that needs to be fixed as well…

But everything else rocks – and, like f.e., you need to get used to
rounded corners (especially if it doesn’t fit your taste), the earlier
you start the better it will feel….
