Audioscuplt, and the analyzers in Diaphone (Resan and Addan) are all fine, although you have to rent them from IRCAM.

What has been unusable about the SPEAR files; maybe I can give you some tips?

Caveat, though — the “spearsynth” max/msp externals in the week13
link are pretty badly-coded (done more for pedagogy than for actual
use), and they are old CodeWarrior examples. The “week11″ programs
are standalone unixy things that modify the SPEAR data files.

You should look at the Spectral Tutorials I wrote here:

http://www.cnmat.berkeley.edu/MAX/downloads/

Especially SDIF. This is a format that SPEAR can export, and can be read with the CNMAT Max objects.
