[ANN] cosm objects (from Expo74)

May 7, 2009 | 2:06 am

hi everyone,
Here’s a link to the cosm objects for spatial audio and virtual environments that Graham and I presented at Expo74. We’ve revised things a bit and provided some documentation.

http://www.allosphere.ucsb.edu/cosm/

cosm contains:
spatial audio objects (ambisonics, doppler shift, distance attentuation)
3D rendering and navigation objects (stereo rendering, quaternion camera movement, collision detection)

Works for Windows/OSX with Max5.

One thing I want to note is that we’ve packaged a number of the externals into one actual external file. This is quite a change from how Max externals are historically packaged, but since all of the objects share common data, it saved us alot of trouble to do it this way.

enjoy!

Whoa, congratulations guys!

I was watching TED talk about the Allosphere the other day and now I see this post.

Did you manage to make some audio-visual work specifically for that environment?

thank you very much, i’m looking forward to working with it.

Well, the objects are actually a kind of a spinoff of the first project we built for the sphere, which was the Allobrain [1], and have also been used for some collaborative works with some of the guys at SciArc. Aaron Mcleran has recently worked on a piece (‘Enso’) using these objects in the sphere, don’t think there’s anything online yet… and there’s been more, but it’s also not online yet. Soon.

Hi Wes,

The cosm library looks like the perfect toolkit for the project I am currently working on. However, I just downloaded the OSX installer but each time I try to install it I get an error message saying "there were errors installing the software"…"Try installing again".

I’m using a MacBookPro OSX 10.4.11 with plenty of space on the hard drive. Any ideas how I might get around this? I really want to try this kit out!

Cheers,

Nick

Hi,

Not sure what the problem is with the installer, but I’ve just uploaded an alternative link (without the installer) – let me know if this works. Installation is basically a case of copying the various cosm_* folders into the appropriate locations in the Max folder.

Same URL:

Thanks Graham, much appreciated.

I’ve just downloaded the .zip and will install it this weekend. I’ll let you know how I get on. I’m building a 3D interactive environment for a dancer so I can’t wait to try the COSM Library out.

Bests,

Nick

Hi,

I just installed the COSM library without any trouble. It all seems to be working well. This is an incredible toolkit, it will take me some time to fully get to grips with it but the objects look great.

Thanks for all of your hard work!

Nick
