Announcement of upcoming Max 5 release

April 11, 2008 | 4:10 am

I’m pleased to announce a release date for Max 5. This new version will be available as a download on April 22nd, with packaged versions available shortly thereafter. Compatible versions of MSP and Jitter will be released at the same time.

The new version will work on your system without disturbing your Max 4.6 environment, so you can evaluate it without affecting your existing Max license. Max 5 will continue to have a 30-day evaluation period.

This is an exciting upgrade that represents an enormous effort by the entire company. Please stay tuned for more information about this upcoming release.

For more information on the upgrade pricing, free updates and even some functionality differences, you can check the Max 5 Upgrade FAQ, available at the following link:

April 11, 2008 | 7:35 pm

i should have mentioned that i sent my ID and have received the go-ahead. will this still apply to max 5?

thanks in advance

April 11, 2008 | 7:36 pm

I purchased MAX/MSP a month ago at the student rate and I was told the upgrade to MAX 5 would be free.

April 11, 2008 | 7:44 pm

There is no reason not to go ahead and purchase MaxMSP. The upgrade
will be free if you buy now.

Darwin,

will we need to pay also for the upgrade of Jitter or is it free ?

i.e. the fee to upgrade a Max/Msp/Jitter licence is 199 $ ?

All the best

I asked a similar question a while back, and I my impression is that
by "new version" of MSP and Jitter, they just mean a compatible build
of MSP and Jitter; there aren’t major updates to Jitter’s
functionality, and that the Max 5 compatible builds will be free. I
could be wrong though.

April 11, 2008 | 10:29 pm

The upgrade to a compatible version of Jitter (and MSP) is free with
your Max 5 upgrade. There haven’t been many substantial changes to
Jitter or MSP functionality – they are just updated to work with the new
Max infrastructure. After we release Max 5, we will begin to consider
the next major Jitter update.

Also, regarding system requirements:
System Requirements Mac: OS 10.4 (or later), 1 GB RAM.

Windows: Vista or XP; minimum 1 Ghz Intel/AMD processor, 1 GB RAM. An
ASIO-compatible sound card recommended for optimum audio performance.
Jitter requires QT 7.1 or later, OpenGL-compatible graphics card, and
OpenGL 1.4 or later.

Stay tuned for more info as it becomes available.

Best,
Andrew B.

not a separate 30 days evaluation whatever..

Sabbatical? Not sure what that means. Will Max5 run vst’s made with earlier
versions of pluggo?

Especially since i get the free upgrade to 5 as well.

Rounded wires are important. Rounded rectangles, well, stylish.

A purely analogue method I sometimes use with great effect is to modulate my heads’ spatial position to and from the screen. Works with all applications and is cross platform.

what?! Rounded corners on wires and boxes? that totally messes with my straight-lined architectural aesthetic. Totally uncool. Like on/off ramps on freeways.

If you look closely at the screenshots in the pre-release articles
online, you’ll see that there are three different kinds of rectangle
rounding. Rounded rectangles are important as well.

I see two but however, I miss a small rounded corner (at least in the screenshots). In case you know OmniGraffle, rounding 2 pts on a 1 pt line. Good for the eyes. But I like the new, relatively big object boxes with the color outline. Much better for messy patches.

April 16, 2008 | 10:06 am

No matter if you don’t see a point in the rounded wires or even new box shapes.
Or even if you do think that it is necessary.

One thing is for sure, and will be made clear on the 22nd.

That Max/MSP 5 is going to be kick ass.

And any new look and any new feel to MAX/MSP, will be for the better, for all of us. Period.

So at my spare time in between making patches, working at the studio and making music, is waiting for that email to pop through saying
‘NEW Max/MSP 5, released today, Download now and enjoy the future.’

The Max 5 project is not the same thing as the agreement with
Ableton. That’s something different, and you will hopefully get to
enjoy it a little further in the future. Enjoy!

You are looking at it the wrong way. Max is a journey. (Is that cheesy or what?) It reminds me of that saying: "A moment to learn, a lifetime to master". If you enjoy experimenting and learning new things, then you will like Max because you will always be learning something new.

It took about a year before I felt proficient. The important thing is to get a good sense of how to build and debug patches. If you keep at it you will have those skills before you know it. I doubt anyone every truly learns it inside and out. But you can get expertise in a certain area, like sound synthesis, or algorithmic composition, or video mixing… It’s all up to you.

Think first(hard), draw patch cables later. No problems with my wrist
after 10? 15? years of heavy Max usage. Laptops for Max have only
been a viable alternative for workstations since after the
millenium , though. And mice/graphics tablets are more comfortable
than trackpads. I always carry a mouse when I travel with my laptop.

They’re all good, but I’m really pleased that I managed to splash out

makes obsessively making sure that connections lay exactly on top of

Im curious, will patches be backward compatible?? Like if I go and work on one of my patches in 5 will i be able to somehow open it in 4?

Also, is jitter going to work, or are we going to have to wait for an update to that as well?

April 21, 2008 | 5:07 pm

Max 5 will feature a completely new patcher file format that is human
readable (similar to xml), and since we can’t go back in time, you won’t
be able to open Max 5 patches in 4.6, etc. There is nothing stopping a
clever individual from writing a 5->4 conversion utility (could probably
use JS, scripting, etc.), but it is not something we are going to
actively support. You will, of course, be able to open all of your Max
patches from version 4 and update them with the new tools that are
available in Max 5.

Jitter has been updated in parallel with Max 5 development, so there
will be a compatible version included in the Max 5 download. There
aren’t many flashy new features to Jitter in this update, but it works
flawlessly with the new infrastructure.

Stay tuned…

It’s like christmas used to be :-) all that anticipation …
I was just thinking – we’re around 8 hours ahead, so assuming C74 gets
into work at 9 (ha ha), the earliest we’re going to see Max5 is 5pm.
If it’s released at the end of their working day, it’s going to be the
middle of tomorrow morning. Waaah! Hope they’ve beefed up their servers!

April 22, 2008 | 7:02 pm

Na. I’m pinging cycling74 every 10 seconds, nothing unusual yet.

1. There is no Max 5, there never was.
2. If there was a Max 5 the site would explode on download anyway.
3. http://www.cycling75.com/ is the new http://www.cycling74.com/

Yup it’s Arnie. I can picture it! Then someone will save the day by busting out an amazing sequencer patch made with Max 5 and the party will be on, Ravenator style: http://youtube.com/watch?v=PkbB-X9654s

This is how angry i may be soon

http://youtube.com/watch?v=kBVmfIUR1DA&feature=related

warning do not watch this video if you are not ==

1. really immature
2. a computer gamer
3. a huge nerd
4. all of the above

warning swearing and lots of humor.

i saw this videoa few years ago when i was really addicted to unreal tournament 2004. the years before i met Max.

Maybe this is just a social experiment to see how loads of rabid fans react when they push a release date….hmmm.

I’m sure you are all working hard and we will enjoy it when it is ready, but if I were hanging out down there, I wouldn’t be able to resist putting off the release just an hour to watch us squirm.

Oops, I guess I hit the wrong button at the error.

All I want to see is:-

MaxMSP 5 Out Now!

but no!

Just of picture of Natasha Bartlett with her headphones plugged into the tree trunk getting sound from the intercellular fluid flowing from the xylem and phloem of the trunk. Maybe that’s why the headphones are big – iPod ones won’t cut the wood…

Yes, I’ve gotten quite friendly with Natasha and her large headphones and tree. Read the interview about 3 times in boredom. ( :

April 22, 2008 | 11:22 pm

Am I crazy or did my patch just get Max 5′ed? That’s badass!

April 22, 2008 | 11:25 pm

It might be the Cellobiohydrolase….

April 22, 2008 | 11:36 pm
