Well, yeah, you can get a $100 scan converter to do that, but I would prefer the old $19 mini-DVI to Video adaptor.

no. scan converters are terrible, and only useful if you’re working

I see, but the jury is still out on whether or not this would work with the NVidia cards through the display port. I’m not holding my breath as even Apple’s own DVI to Video adaptors have had a bad history of working with MacPros with NVidia cards. The pins have to be sending composite or S-Video signals. I remain hopeful this will work. First to test and give results gets a high-five.

Certainly the use of a scan converter is possible. The point is, what cost $19 to do a week ago now costs $100 or more ($30 for the displayport to VGA adaptor and another $70 for the scan converter). This coupled with the removal of a firewire port on both the MB and MBP and no CPU performance upgrades just has me stopping for a second and saying “what the heck am I getting for this extra money?” The answer is, graphics performance, and that is fantastic, no doubt, but seems hardly worth it.

I am sick of Apple compromising functionality for form. They have the room in these new things for a Firewire port and they at least partially own the license for it so Firewire would have been no problem in the new machines.

The iPhone, the phone that owners use more than any other phone because it does so many things well, doesn’t have a replaceable battery because it would make it a tad bit thicker.

I could go on and on… just frustrating.

Mind you, I have NO problem with the move to DisplayPort. Precedent needs to be set for standards to take off, and much like the move to all USB and the gutting of the floppy drive on the iMac, Apple is often at the vanguard of these changes and should be. But in the past it’s always been coupled with a price-performance breakthrough. Now we have to pay $100 more to get less. Just a bummer.
