is there a way after loading an audio file into buffer~ to ask for the length of the file (either in ms or samps)? IS there even a way to do this for unloaded audio files in general?

As Nicolas wrote [sfinfo~] is the way to go.

if you want your buffer to load an entire sample, you have to load it in [sfinfo~] first, get the lenght, resiez your [buffer~] then load the sample

no, just use the replace message to load the file into buffer~, than bang the info~ from the right outlet [bang when finished loading] of the buffer~ to get it's size.

do you mean Sebastian, that "replace" will stretch the buffer to the full length of loaded sample?

Now I understanad why most of the patches I found use "replace" instead of "read"

The reference manual is not very clear about this IMO, now it makes sense but it wasn't that obvious until now.
