My Macbook certainly has tons of built-in midi sounds (general midi, I guess?). But how do I access them in MAX with the noteout or midiout object? This seems as if it should be a no-brainer but I am stumped - I think I've even seen people do it really fast. The tyranny of the piano is becoming too much...

Here's the guts of two abstractions I use to play the general midi sounds on my laptop. One is dedicated to channel 10 drum kit sounds but you could merge it all into one patch if you wanted. The [coll]s and [umenu]s might be quite helpful for loading up the sounds you are looking for.
