Audio from Max and Max 6 in Live

I've been trying to figure out how the audio from max works in Live. Under the Audio From pull down I show both a Max and Max 6 choice. When either is selected there are 8 stereo or 16 mono inputs. But I've yet to be able to use this "inputs".

Does anyone know how to use them? In a M4L patch I've tried every output type object I can think of, but maybe I'm missing something.

And what's with having both Max and Max 6 as a choice? Can one patch directly from the outputs Max/MSP to Live?

Any help or insight on how these Max & Max 6 inputs work would be hugely appreciated. Thanks!

Jeff

Audio in Max For Live is dependent upon Live's own audio engine. You can route audio all you want *within* a M4L device but when it comes to going in or out of the device that is handled by Live's routing system.

From your description is sounds like you might be confusing M4L with Live's Rewire audio Inputs. Rewire is not part of M4L (where, as stringtapper points out, audio routing is contained within the Live app and M4L device(s)) but an independent way of routing audio, midi and transport info to/from Rewire compatible applications. The first thing to do is to be clear which you are trying to use. If you are using M4L - which it appears you are - the Max inputs you are referring to are not relevant (Though interestingly, On my system I only see Max - not Max6 inputs.) If you *are* trying to Rewire the two apps together, there is documenation in both Live and Max for how to get Rewire going...

Thanks for the replies. I started digging in with Rewire in Live/Max just after posting. I've used Rewire a lot on the past and like it quite a bit. It may be an option for what I'm doing, but it looks like Rewire in Max only has 16 channels. Workable, but not ideal for my situation.

I'm basically doing a bunch of spatialization and speaker remapping from different surround sources to a 16.1 dome setup in a planetarium through ambisonics. So I need to capture the original surround stream, b-format channels, and encoded discreet channels, equaling about 40 channels total all chasing timecode. The realtime encoder/decoder is built in Max right now so I could do multiple passes through Rewire from Max or rebuild it completely in Live/M4L, but the routing workarounds in Live are pain. SoundFlower only has 16 channels and Jack is OK, but seems to cause Max to crash a lot.

Inside the Max audio settings there is a Live option at the very bottom of the driver list. When I choose it though, I don't see any input or output options. Any idea what that's for?

I'll keep plugging at it. Thanks again for the replies!
