I see from the pattr manual that it can bind other objects than the normal ones listed (int,float, list, symbol) and it ‘merely refers to the data inside of another object, and is restricted to the type of data expected by the object’.

Great. But I’ve got a jit.gl.videoplane which would happily take a ‘scale 0.1 0.1 0.1′ message. But it’s in a subpatch.

Is it possible to add scripting names to jit.gl.videoplane objects in subpatches or abstractions and have autopattr access them using messages like

myPatch:myVideoPlane scale 0.1 0.1 0.1

? It just seems weird that for all the good it looks like autopattr can do, I’ll still have to create 3 pattr objects in my sub patches, pass 0.1 to 3 floats (which autopattr can see), then pack them up and prepend them in order to get the message to the videoplane. There must be a better way. Help!

you can bind to the scale attribute directly, as well as many others… not sure if they all can be. great stuff, it lets you bypass the floats or whatever is making the current scale amount, and binds to the actual value held by the jit.gl.gridshape at that moment:

pattr my_pattr_name @bindto my_subpatch_name::my_gridshape_scripting_name::scale

I believe so, they would still have the same pattr name at their level, but in your pattrstorage they would be separated (indented) in groups under their abstraction. the catch (I think) is that each abstraction object is *always* given a unique scripting name, whether you set it or not, and this is probably the reason. Hah, couldn’t figure that out before… makes perfect sense now, it’s for pattrstorage!

maybe for other reasons too…? if any wizards care to add, I’d care to read…

yep, any object with a scripting name, if you duplicate, will be given a new name using array notation, hence the name[1] name[2] etc. you can access these programmatically using [sprintf]:

sprintf <commandto> object_scripting_name[%ld]</commandto>

where [%ld] is just a number box. so you could access them all in sequence easily using [uzi] through [sprintf].

there is one other question on this I have – is it efficient to use the sprintf to send int 1 which is then converted into a bang, given pattr won’t send bangs? i’m thinking not, although its only a hunch.

not sure your exact question, the sprintf idea was mainly to be able to access multiple objects using the array[1] notation. to “send int 1 that’s converted into a bang”, not sure what that means… post a patch bit? or maybe you’ve worked it out through fiddling :)

one thing I remember was using [mtr] once, I wanted it to remember bangs, but it won’t. it will however remember ints, so I had it remember a toggle sequence, which I then used as bangs for the actual effect. another great object to look into if you haven’t, ahh, [mtr]. Do get some sleep sometime though.

Ha – yes my question was about sending bangs by converting them into numbers and then sending them using objects that deal with numbers but not bangs. Like pattr for example. I’ve worked round the problem though, cheers.
