I am working on a patch using the avg~ object to read the amplitude of incoming audio to change the velocities of a midi track by controlling the drive dial on a velocity device (i.e. guitar input changes velocity of a drum track in real time for live performance).

I am getting raw absolute amplitude data form the avg~ object, but it I think it needs scaling as the changes are minuscule and ineffective at the moment.

The drive dial goes -1 to 1 (0 making no change), so would I need the rms amplitude (using average~) or would it be best to make a calculation using logs and the expr object? I am guessing something similar to the scaling in the gain~ object, but the posts I have seen on that change a 0-127 range into 0-7 more or less and I am not really sure why that is...

If anyone could point out what would be best and/or point me in the direction of further reading on the subject I would really appreciate that.
