figured it out. (for those interested, change the value of the cells. there should be a black border that appears on the outside of the rectangle. adjust appropriately).

Hey listen, do a search on the forum on the matrixctrl. There was a killer post a few weeks ago where (seejayjames) demonstrates how you can update your own different colored cells to have multiple states. And more so, how to change the size with [thispatcher] (check out the script section in the help files)

I have been using this ever since to affect periods and ampltudes.
