I think you dont need to worry about append really. just use prepend set and it'll change the message.

From my experince with writing externals that access a buffer~ I'd 

guess that's rather unlikely, but who known, maybe there is a trick to

For #2, this is a problem. I think just use a buffer~ that's longer than you need, then determine the length and copy to another buffer~. A bit of a workaround but doable (I think). Undoubtedly there are others on here who have better solutions.
