Hello,

I just purchased Max/MSP and I’ve found it very fun piece of software!

I wonder if you guys could suggest a book or another information resource about Max (language itself, design patterns, applications, etc). Little engineer inside me thinks it might be more efficient to read a good book than just try/error…

Thank you!

Oskari,
You will probably get this same suggestion at least 10 different times:

Composing Interactive Music by Todd Winkler

http://www.amazon.com/Composing-Interactive-Music-Techniques-Ideas/dp/0262731398/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1224430058&sr=8-1

The documentation within max/msp is pretty good, definitely read through them first. You will find yourself returning to documentation over & over through out time.

Also, the forum is a brillant interactive way to learn as well. (Recommended to search the forum archives before asking a question that may have been asked already)

Patch on!

Miller Puckette’s “The Theory and Technique of Electronic Music” is online. The examples are in Pd, but mostly they are easy to realize in Max.

Miller Puckette’s book which was just mentioned is probably the best resource. But some books that explain computer music techniques in general are “The Computer Music Tutorial” by Curtis Roads and “Computer Music” by Charles Dodge. Books like these when taken and applied to Max/MSP can help steep you in the history and technique of computer music in general and allow your understanding to progress no matter what environment and language you use.
