buffer~ performance with play~ vs. index~

I had been using index~ to help play sounds that are loaded into a
buffer. As the project developed I needed to switch to play~ in order
to play a portion of the loaded sound rather than the whole thing.

The patch is supposed to be able to run for hours on end and could do
this without error when I was using index~. Now that I’ve switched to
play~ I can only get 2.5 hours at the most before Max/MSP crashes.

I am clearing each buffer it has completed playing its loaded file so
I know it’s not a memory build-up…unless of course play~ responds
differently than index~ when a buffer is cleared. Anyway, I’d
appreciate any suggestions to help improve the performance of play~.

Stats of the system are:
Mac mini 1.66 GHz dual core
2GB RAM
MOTU Ultralite firewire
Max/MSP (v4.6.1)

Thank you! ::Norbert

Please send us a stripped down version of your patch which demonstrates the problem.

Andrew,

Thank you. I’m attaching three files; all are very small:

flashserver-perturb-7.pat
Uses Olaf Matthes flashserver external and sends data to two poly
objects. I don’t know if this will help but it gives you context of
the whole system.

swarm_4mess_alt6~.pat
Is the patch in question. It’s a mess of cables that I haven’t taken
time to clean up, but the play~ object is connected to buffer~ and
uses line~ to provide signal.

swarm_4mess~.pat
This is the version I had working before deciding to use play~ It will
show how I initially had index~ workingwith no problems.

Thanks very much for your help. ::Norbert
