in a text object. When I ouptut line 2, the text is cut off, and ends in "".

If I remove the 3 tabs before "Location", then it outputs properly. Since this is xml, it's kind of important to keep those characters around!

This is in Max 4.57 on OSX 10.39. Can anyone else reproduce? 

(I hope all the tabs are preserved in this form and any cut an pastes.)

These are exactly 256 chars!
Look in the manual for [text], about the "line" message and I'm afraid  
you'll be disappointed.
