I'm very glad to say I filed a bug report on this in Februray, and it is fixed in Max 7.3.4! I only tried it with startpont and endpoint also specified, but I can verify it works with at least up to 50 channels. Note at the time this was originally observed, buffer~ only handled two channels.

I'm sorry, I have to take that back, I can get to the first index of each channel, and the endpoint then works, but I can't set an offset into the channel. Damn.
