I'd rather expect the system to slow down

I have some error message that says :
"ubumenu : unable to create gworld"
and cause max (4.6) to crash on Windows VISTA
From what i read on the forum, it seems
due to low memory situation, which might
be the case because of the lot of texture
and sample loaded into memory, but well,
I'd rather expect the system to slow down
than crashing with no warning...
Is there any workaround for this issue?
Not using VISTA? (i wish i could)
Not using any ubumenu? (doh!)
any help welcome..
