Can max/msp do this

December 29, 2008 | 10:01 am

I would like to use max/msp as a vsti, receiving midi on several midi channels, process the midi, and send it to several other vsti’s hosted by the max/msp plugin. Is that possible? Im on the windows platform.

I should add that I’m not looking for someone to tell me exactly how to do this, just want to know if its doable, so I’ll know if this is the right software for me.

Hello,

Yes you can do it, the only question is what you want to do with your midi in max, produce synthetised sound? filtering incoming soud, play samples?

All is possible but need some practice…

I would like to process the midi to create new midi signals, and create audio from this by by sending the midi to vst instruments. The question is: Can max/msp used as a vsti in turn host other vsti’s?

Max/Msp can not be used as a vsti, to answer your question.
It is a vsti host by itself, therefore it can accept and manipulate
incoming midi messages, and drive other vsti’s accordingly.

Not true, Max can be used as a VST. Max4 supports VST
export, Max5 will hopefully soon be supporting VST export as well.

I use Max generated VSTi in Sonar all the time.

This is not the functionality that the original poster is wondering
about.
I insist.

i have yet to get VSTi MIDI output to work w/. Max5 in Digital Performer, or Ableton Live.
I use Max/Msp as standalone to process midi and send it to DAW all the time: in fact, been doing this for a very long time, in Max/msp history terms…rewire was a great addition, all tempo/timesig changes responding to the same daw commands…all in sync!
BUT:
I have never gotten the Max4 "tutorial9′ to work, and have only gotten any VSTi midi output to work w/ Max4 and Ableton Live.

How ’bout a tutorial where these issues are addressed? And hopefully, not just in one DAW, but in several….

And then what about exporting pluggos? That’s what that is, after all.

as people here have said, Pluggo in MaxMSP 4.63 will allow you to build VSTi’s to handle midi information. Max 5 can be rewired to essentially act as a VST, even if it isn’t actually a VST.

Yes, and besides, by the time the OP has been through the tutorials and
gotten up to speed with max patching as a whole there should be pluggo
for v5 too. Or soemething new and altogether different. Either way it’s
a matter of just jumping in.

I have pluggo VSTi MIDI output working in Ableton Live and Sonar.
Not sure why it is not working for you.

I have attached my test patch, maybe it will help.
