I don't want to continually use things/abstractions without understanding exactly why all the objects are there.

I notice these two dry/wet abstractions are very similar.

I get that the /100 is the same as *0.01 (but x is better practice right?)

also i've seen the $1 20 - Line~ thing about before as a smoother but don't see why it is necessary

if anyone can make any of this clearer to me i would be grateful

Yes, [* 0.01] is more efficient than [/ 100.]. And, yes, the smoothing is necessary to avoid clicks if you plan to change the dry/wet factor while sound is playing. See

Although floating-point multiplication is faster than FP division, a single patch cord is costing 

 more CPU than any single arithmetic operation. In fact, I suspect that even trig and logarithms are faster than patch cords (but I haven't been arsed to test it). So if you're worried about this, you may well be being penny-wise but pound-foolish, as the saying goes.

And integer division (what Danny asked about) may be just as fast, if not faster, than floating-point multiplication.

The MSP tutorials should explain the reason for line~ objects. The simple explanation is that any sudden change to DSP processing is almost certain to give you clicks or other nasty artifacts. But some people like glitch.
