can you record a "video" of your patch

April 29, 2011 | 3:51 pm

Hello,

I am composing using a mixer I build in Max. Would be nice, since it’s live composing, to make a visual recording of what I am doing so I can later reproduce and make changes if I need it.
Anyone knows a good way to do this?

Thanks a lot

If you really want video, you can use one of those screen capture programs, like Snapz Pro X (mac) or Camtasia (win).

But maybe you could instead just write the parameters of your patch to a file with a small time interval (maybe 20-100 ms or so), like you would record automation in a DAW. That way you can actually have the patch ‘reproduce’ the composition, if you manage to add all the relevant parameters.

Check out [text] or [coll] for writing data to a file. You can think about adding a timestamp to every line of data you add, so there is some info about the speed of playback in the data itself.

I had my class build a rudimentary screen capture software as their first "follow along" exercise.

Feel free to use it. It’s a little pokey (slow framerate) but it does the job.

QuickTime X, File > New Screen Recording.
To capture audio, you have to physically loop the output back into a line in, or even pick up the speakers via a mic, but it’s free and very straightforward to use,

On PC I use Camstudio… free with decent results. I dislike recording full screen so it can do a fixed region or one that will follow your mouse.

If you’re thinking more about sequencing, you should also have a look at the mtr object.

BTW, Camtasia is available for Mac as well. I’ve been using it for more than a year now.
