Hi all,

New here, so pardon if this is posted incorrectly, but my problem is this:
I need to record a mix of external audio, fed into my Mac via the line-in ports, and internal audio generated by a MOTU Symphonic Instruments sampler sitting on my HD.
Now, I’ve created an aggregate device, but can’t seem to program it correctly with soundflower to get all the audio to Audio HiJack Pro to record the mix! I can route all audio internal to the computer [Safari, iTunes, MOTU-SI, etc] through Soundflower and into HiJack, but for the life of me, I can’t seem to route Line-In audio at all! I can get it to where it shows it is inputing to either Sound->Line-In or Aggregate device [input shows on level display] but that’s as far as I can get it, and no further. It will not play through my speakers, nor route to HiJack to record.
The only way I can get line-in audio to record and play through my speakers is to use only Mac’s Sound: Line In and Line Out… but then I lose all internal audio such as MOTU-SI.
Can someone tell me how I can get all audio to HiJack and also monitor on my speakers?

Mac G5 dual 2.3 w 2 G RAM, OS 10.4.11

5 Rack mount synths, premixed, and feeding to Mac line inputs.
MOTU Symphonic Instruments on HD.
Have Soundflower 1.3.1, LineIn 2.0.3, Audio Hijack Pro 2.8.1

I swear under OS 10.1, all this mixing used to happen automatically: If it came out of the speakers, it was also recorded. Somewhere along the way Apple messed this all up.

Can someone help me please?

Thank you.

It doesn’t seem to have much, if anything to do with Max/MSP. Have you
asked on a MOTU forum?

Yes, I have, and get no solution. It’s beyond just MOTU, since I can get that into HiJack with no problem. It’s getting the Mac’s line-in audio to mix with it into HiJack which, for some reason, I can’t get to work.
That is why I am asking on any/every audio forum I can find, since no one seems to have this problem, or a solution to it!

I’ve read the instructions and can’t make heads nor tails of anything since there’s so much information there, yet none seems to address my problem. I can get audio-in into HiJack Pro, but not Symphonic instruments [on the computer] to bus to HiJack at the same time.

Are there somewhere simple “connect-the-dots” instructions for someone who’s just trying to compose music and fully heard what it sounds like?

I would not use Audio HiJack Pro together with Jack OS X – it just
complicates the situation. I would recommend using some other method
to record the audio, via Jack OS X.

I would then also start with a very simple setup within Jack OS X –
for example, route the audio from Symponic Instruments, via Jack OS
X, to your audio recording app.

If that works, then similarly you can try to record the audio input
via Jack OS X to your audio recording app.

Then if that works, try and do both at the same time. If you need
more help, I’d suggest you post your query on the Jack OS X Yahoo
support group.

as mentioned above, if you are using osx you can create an aggregate
device in the audio utility that comes with OSX and then you can
access all your many soundcard’s ins and outs in max.

cheers,

JACK is not an intuitive program but it is simple. it is based on the

This thread is way off topic now, but I will make one last post here
and encourage Bobwen to ask any followup questions on the Jack OS X
Yahoo forum as I have mentioned before.

Jack allows you to specify ONE audio “interface” at a time. This is
the audio “soundcard” if you will. In many instances it is your
internal Mac built in audio, sometimes it can be a device (e.g. MOTU
Traveler audio interface), and now with the Mac’s software aggregate
devices, it can be a *combination* of several “soundcards” wrapped up
to appear as a single device (e.g. internal Mac built in audio AND
MOTU Traveler).

This audio interface is specified in the Jack OS X preferences. You
then start the Jack server, and you will see, in the Connections
Manager window, the “system” device listed: this represents your
audio interface.

From that point on, you can specify in your various audio
*applications* (e.g. MOTU Symphonic Instruments) to use the Jack
server as its audio interface – it should appear as “JackRouter” or
similar in your audio prefs setup in each application. An exception
to this is for applications that use the Mac “default” audio device
(like iTunes for instance). In this case, you have to change the
default Mac device to use the JackRouter; this is done in either
AudioMIDI Setup, or in the Sound control panel.

Having done this for your applications you want to use with Jack, you
should now see your applications and your “system” audio interface in
the Connections Window. Now you connect the those up as you desire
(in your case, you want to connect MOTO SI in the Send Ports column
to your audio recording application in the Receive ports column, as
well as “system” in the Send Ports column to your audio recording
application in the Receive ports column. I leave the details as to
how to make connections up to you (it’s in the Jack OS X
documentation.

Hope that helps,
Dan
