Is there a way to change the position at which the cycle object starts pulling data from the sound file? can this be done in real time?

Yes and yes, using the buffer_offset attribute. But changing the buffer_offset while listening to the cycle~ will likely cause a click, so you probably will want to duck the volume to 0 before making the change.

cool - I really did read the help file for buffer several times - but I had not looked at the reference file for buffer. I'll check both out again and look a this patch - thank you.

Note that buffer_offset is an attribute of the cycle~ object, not the buffer~ object. See the help or reference for cycle~ for the full explanation.

Here's an example of one way one could duck the amplitude of the cycle~ when changing the buffer offset. It still is an audible dip, of course, but it's arguably less annoying than a click.
