what is the best way to go for live streaming video and audio, actually to chat with another person via internet (audio and video) using max?.

does this work? another port for audio then? you'd have to know the 

recipient's ip address i guess? does this work? i'm a terrible max

This is awesome and it certainly can be done. Use jit.net.send / receive for the video matrices. For the audio, you can convert into a matrix and send it, though I haven't tried it and don't know the results. I have definitely tried video and text messaging in a computer lab via Max and it's totally fine. You'll need to do some tweaking with finding and setting IP's, especially through a Windows Firewall (need to poke a hole to let Max through). Probably will have to manually find and set the IP, unless the users have Java, then there's an .mxj example to find the IP automatically.

Use a textedit for chatting too, if you want. Very straightforward, though I would keep it to one line maximum (like most chats are -- Return sends text). I've had crashes when it's set to "0" lines (supposed to be "as many as one wants", I guess). Pasting text in there has repeatedly caused crashes on XP. However, setting it to a large number of lines has been fine.

No problems with the text object / window though, for longer messages. Another option, but not as immediate as the textedit.
