I want coll just to output the data contents but it interprets the number associated with the data as symbol. hence when outputting, I get "symbol datacontent". What should I do to get rid of this?

[coll] has done this since time immemorial, and Patrick's suggestion is SOP.

There are one or two other objects that flag their output with either 'symbol' or 'text' or something similar. I suppose there was a reason for this that seemed compelling twenty-some-odd years ago, but I can't, for the life of me, remember what it was. Remembering the solution is more to the point. [route] is your friend.

Ok, route is the solution but in the helpfile, this situation does not occur. So what is different between my patch and the helpfile?

There is no difference, the symbol example in the helpfile outputs symbol also
