I have some pretty large lists I'd like to sort based on something the 3rd or 4th columns. That's easy enough. but let's say I want to transfer every string in the coll within a certain range based on the 3rd column to another coll object. The only way I can see of doing this is to sort the coll and then bang through it until the element is out of range. Shouldn't there be a better method? Perhaps I should just get better at Java?

I think the 'dump' message to coll is probably what you want. You could do something along the lines of this...

coll, return all elements in a given range.
