Coloring Max GUI elements using messages?

Is it possible to set the object color settings of an GUI object such as a button by sending it a message of some kind? If so, can someone point me in the right direction? It would be a huge improvement to my max patches usability if I can achieve it.

Apologies if this has been discussed or is in the documentation, I have tried looking but to no avail.

check all the messages you can use in the inspector. you can drag them right into the patcher to create the appropriate message boxes…

If you open the object inspector (command or control and i) then click on the little @ sign to show the attribute names in the leftmost column (in Max 5, I’m not sure if this has changed in Max 6) you can see the messages the object will accept. You can also drag the attribute name onto the patcher canvas/object to create the message ready to go! For example [button] understands fgcolor/outlinecolor/bgcolor/blinkcolor followed by 4 RGBA values such as you might get from [swatch].
