I'm working on a patch where I'd like to superimpose some moving low resolution cross hairs on a high resolution still image (1920 x 1400), and have it draw to the max patcher (on a 24 inch monitor). Even on the mighty Mac Pro, having to run the image through jit.qt.movie and combine it with the cross hairs grinds the machine down to a halt. I thought of using fpic for the image and putting a jit.pwindow over it with the cross hairs, but that, even playing with the alpha channel, does not work.

I realize it's kind of asking the impossible, but any ideas for doing this?

Why to a max patcher instead of a jit.window?

textbook case for using jit.gl.render tied to a jit.pwindow. draw 

movie on to a jit.gl.videoplame @transform_reset 2, then use 

jit.gl.sketch to draw the crosshairs. use @colormode uyvy for both 

the jit.qt.movie and jit.gl.videoplane for speed. should be no problem.

if there is no jit.gl.render in it, plus a couple of 

jit.gl.videoplane, you're treading a wrong track.

could you let us see your patch?

Also, another small improvement may be achieved by reading the still image to a ji.matrix object using the importmovie message, instead of using the jit.qt.movie, and anyway you should try banging the object only once, not constantly with a metro as you would for a movie.

Thanks very much for this. I confess I've been avoiding the OpenGL tutorials, at least up until now :-). The following runs like the wind, though I'm not sure if my using [loadmess drawto...] is the most elegant way getting the context order right.
