Controller info

September 3, 2006 | 8:38 pm

Hi all,

I need some advice, I’m planning on using a Boss GT-3 effects processor
in a composer’s concert and I would like to operate the unit via max
using controller information. I haven’t got a clue as to where to
begin, I have a feeling it has something to do with accessing the raw
MIDI data which I have never done before.

could I possibly get some advice in this?

Thanks, hope to read from somebody soon.

To clarify–you want to generate the control data in Max and send it via MIDI to your GT-3? For this, you don’t need to work with raw MIDI data–see the help file for ctlout (or ctlin if you are wanting to get control data into Max). It is actually very easy–just send int data in the proper range to ctlout, with the controller number you want to use as an argument. To send pitchbend use bendout, and for hi-res (14 bit) use xbendout. The documentation with your GT-3 should help you with setting it up to receive and map the control data.

Thanks tim,

You’ve pretty much hit it on the head!

i don’t know teh GT-3 but used quite a lot of Boss units – including
the GX700 which is a quite similar unit (but in rack format)

generally the midi implementation in Boss is quite good – and you can
do a lot with just CC and Program changes – for my GX700 i asked the
midi implementation (from boss) and you can access everyparameter
with sysex – which takes a little more time to program than CC but is
not that difficult

where to begin?? connect the midi out of the unit to max, change some
parameter on the unit, and see what midiin reports – from there it’s
just reversing the command…
