Customizing the APC40

Customizing the APC40
It’s possible that a major reason I purchased M4L was to finally have the ability to customize the APC40 – which surprisingly is a very limited tool. However I’m not learning M4L as quickly as I’d like. All the tutorials (several) I’ve gone through address the basics but I’m looking to jump to the chase to focus on customizing control surfaces. I finally found this – http://vimeo.com/8956091. So my knowledge stops there.
Can anyone recommend tutorials of any kind on customizing control surfaces? The APC40 specifically though I’m interested in any broad instruction as well. The depth of Max still seems obfuscated to me but maybe i just need to continue going through the accompanying tutorials. Thanks in advance.

I am in the same boat. I am surprised by M4L in general, seems very limited in both it’s library, number of users, community activity, and it’s synthesis ability. But honestly I don’t really care about all that, I just want to get my APC40 to be the beast I know it can be.
Thanks for posting the video, I’ll watch it here. And hopefully get to making a number of devices that get the APC to live up to it’s potential.
Things I am hoping to make with it:
A “Piano Keyboard” should be simple enough, just a double keyboard that can be associated with a single track. Don’t know why there isn’t one made yet. Mysterious, seems like it would be very easy.
A “Clip Loop Controller” this is maybe alittle too complex to describe, but basically something that could theoretically go with the “Clip Grabber” and help to mangle the loop points and start points of the clip. Though It seems that the clip ‘start’ can only be controlled via midi???
What are you hoping to make with the APC40??

IMHO, there is no quick way or short cut to doing things in max other than one on one instruction to address your specific needs. Max is not a quick software… many folk refer to it as a rabbit hole. It is wonderful but you have to invest the time to get the kind of fluidity you are looking for.
That being said… check out the help file for the ‘hi’ object and learn all you can about midi and the ‘ctlin’ an ‘notein’ objects.

I posted a reply in this thread which outlines 2 basic tools I use to get all the specific information I need to customize the APC40.
Let me know if you guys need more help.
I dont frequent this forum as much, but if you were to post at the Ableton M4L forum, I could walk you though most things on the topic.

For the Clip grabber have a look at the drums mode, for the clip looper have a look at scene one…
