ddg.velamp external

This is probably a silly question but:

Where do I put this external in Max6? I’ve placed it everywhere and have even made an ‘externals’ folder in ‘file preferences’ and pointed to it but Im still having no luck. Putting it in ‘patches’ or ‘examples’ which I understand is the default directory to place externals has no effect. I have done heaps of tutorials and just wanted to make a basic synth but this is driving me up the wall!

Assuming you have the correct version of this extern for your platform and version of Max

Try putting it inside the Cycling ’74 folder in your Max6 application folder.

Restart Max

I have a folder in my Cycling ’74 folder I use as a catch-all for 3rd party stuff and things I need to be automatically included in the Max search path. It doesn’t get deleted or over-written when I install a new version of Max.

Yeah ive done that. It opens in Max6 but I cant get it to show up in the object explorer. Its so frustrating! I cant seem to find any other version so Im not sure although I know the tutorial was written a long time ago.

I was really liking it as I could actually play with and make music with this synth. If anyone out there knows where to get a more compatible version or even knows of any tutorials like it that are more current Id really like to know about them. I think I need something to break up the standard included tutorials in Max and actually have some fun.

If anyone can help Id greatly appreciate it!

Open ddg.velamp in Max6, save it in Max6 format, dropped in Extras folder, restart, and then it show up for me.

Ah yes

I forgot that it’s an abstraction. As such it will not show up in autocompletion until you have already used it in a Max session.

thanks for bearing with me guys… I have opened it in Max6. Saved it. Put it into extras. Now it shows up in the drop down extras menu as patch but will still not show up as an object in the explorer. Just to clarify, Rick, does it actually show up as an object for you or just a patch?

@cs1122, does it really matter? as long as you can save this as “ddg.velamp” in your max search path and then type “ddg.velamp” into an empty object box and it show up, that is all you need surely?

however, i sympathise with you. from memory, those tutorials are ridiculously old and do not have that much to do with modern max. you might want to play around with examples from the examples folder (extras menu), such as “X.FM~” etc. there should really be more synth tutorials for max.

i have to say, that ddg.velamp abstraction is over 10 years old. i cannot actually believe a cycling74 employee is happy to still put that about. it is awful. the least you could do is take the three mins needed to update it to a less Max3-ish state. such as the attached.

Ah the penny has dropped at last! Thanks pid. Didn’t realise I could just use it as an object and attach my own dials. I was expecting to see something like in tutorial as the object itself and was stumped as to why mine looked totally different. Its working, and ive learnt something new, so thats the main thing. Thanks for the heads up on the X.FM example. Ill check it out.

FWIW you can get the ddg.velamp abstraction/patch to work like an object. Open the object explorer, click on the Patchers tab and select ddg.velamp. It should load into your patch like an object.
