Did the readings and searched the forums, to no avail. Newbie Help

February 25, 2007 | 6:55 am

Hi everyone, posting on this forum was my last resort, especially to something so rudimentary as what i am about to ask. Nonetheless, i hope you guys can understand the frustration in troubleshooting even the more minute in max/msp. I looked up the manuals and plouged the forum archives, but still couldn’t solve my problem.

I am running a MAC OSX 10.4.8 on a 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo.

I had recently installed Max/msp 4.6.2; Jitter 1.6.2 and still am in demo mode.

Here are some of the problems that popped up which i just couldn’t solve.

Firstly, i can’t access the help directory within the program. It only works when i open it either from max or double clicking the help files.

My inspectors are also not working. They only work after i have manually double clicked all of them. Otherwise it says:
error: no inspector for message

Lastly, when i click options in max, i am missing "file preferences", "performance options".

And when i click on dsp status under options, it reads. "error:MSP/ad: cannot open DSP Status"
It only begins to pop up after i had manually double clicked on dsp status.

error: no inspector for message

Lastly, upon start up, i already have error messages in the max window. It reads:

Jitter is in demo mode

Can anyone help? Thank you so much.

It sounds like you should try a complete re-install from scratch of
Max 4.6.2 and Jitter 1.6.2

Either that or you have some other issues with your OS disk.

Do you have issues with any other apps, or any other permissions
problems?

Hi Vade. I did complete re-installs, and cleared the preferences as well.

Are you suggesting i re-install my OS?

Thats very odd then that clean re-installs did not fix the issue. Are
you certain your OS or disk has no issues? Can you run disk utility
(in Applications/Utilities and repair permissions and verify that
your disk is ok?

Usually installing Max is really straightforward and things ‘just
work’, especially on the Mac platform.

Are you installing from an account that is an Administrator or has
Admin privs? Maybe there is something wonky going on in that end.

Good luck!

Ya, i did a check, and i had errors with both my permissions and disk verification. I am probably going to re-install my OS. Hope it works. I’ve just been so obsessed with max/msp right now. Seems to be at unhealthy levels. :)

installing an OS over a bad disk is a recipe for failure. Make sure
to fix your disk before installing any software on it.

wait wait wait wait wait…., most of those are java errors. How about downloading the JRE from sun’s site first? Do a reinstall of that mofo and maybe it’ll clear.

actually, at the bottom there’s that dsp/inspector/help stuff… hrm……………………………………………………………………

I’m on XP so I can’t really help that much.

Hi guys, thanks for helping out. I did a reformat, but now i can’t use my max/msp anymore, cuz after the reformat, the trial period somehow ended. I tried using Runtime to run the jitter tutorial 1 and the same messages popped up in the max window.

Jitter 1.6.2 installed
MXJ System CLASSPATH:
/-/Applications/MaxMSP 4.6/Cycling ’74/java/lib/jitter.jar
/-/Applications/MaxMSP 4.6/Cycling ’74/java/lib/jode-1.1.2-pre-embedded.jar
/-/Applications/MaxMSP 4.6/Cycling ’74/java/lib/max.jar
MXJClassloader CLASSPATH:
/-/Applications/MaxMSP 4.6/Cycling ’74/java/classes/
? error: (mxj add dir) unable to init mxj classloader. ERROR: -10
? error: Could not load class ‘com/cycling74/max/MaxObject’
? error: Could not find framework class com/cycling74/max/MaxObject
? error: Could not load class ‘com/cycling74/jitter/JitterObject’
? error: could not find jitter.jar

Could it be some issue with the Java this time round? I did a clean install. So other than the normal updates, i haven’t installed anything.

But what is different now is that the videos are working in the tutorials.

There is now no way of me checking or trouble shooting cuz the trial has ended. Is there anyway i can get the folks for cycling74 to help me? I had 13 days left on trial. And i will purchase it once the demo is over. Its just extremely frustrating for me… not knowing if the problems are arising due to my lack of knowledge… or some issue with my computer.

YC,
i had a similar problem w/ my help patches once i upgraded.
No one on the forum knew what i was talking about, since
i described it so badly. i ended up calling up cycling 74
(their number is on the website, but the forum is the best
place to try to work out problems first, since the bulk of
experienced users on the forum) and told them my problem.
They mentioned something about how they wrote using the
same code as os x or something in that nature. That is why
some of your help files will not pop up on their own, but
will w/ ease once you open new patcher (or just within a
existing patch). i believe they are working on these
bugs. Hope this allows your head to hurt a bit less.
