DSP audio interface

Hello all,

basically i have been making patches that are maxing out my CPU (iMac 2.66 core 2 duo)

would anyone recommend a hardware solution for this? (DSP interface?)

cheers,

8 cores in a Mac Pro… Or wait a year or two…
I don’t know of recent external DSP boxes running faster than normal processors, ten years ago that was different, I guess there is not a real performance advantage of a Kyma system for example, but I might be wrong…
(Dedicated DSPs are certainly more expensive and don’t run Max patches either…)

But there might be ways to optimize your patch. Nowadays I run rarely into performance problems. What are you doing to max out Max?…

really?

I don’t extend my main performance patch faster than the technology advances. I guess as soon as I would incorporate video with the same principles I use in audio, this will bring my machine to an halt…
Maybe I just wait another year or two, then it might be sufficient…;-)

My demand for new features is slower than the speed increase of new hardware. Not adding too many new features does have the advantage, that I know my instrument pretty well. Going from 8 “tracks” to a poly~ with 32 voices needed a complete rewrite and it was worth it. I had to relearn some ways of playing my instrument, and that was worth it as well. When I did it, my new MacBook was definitely fast enough, but I could not have done it with my old Powerbook…

Of course if I start dreamin’ there is never enough processing power…

thanks for your time guys,

i often run into problems as i use many voices on my poly~ objects,

there are ways i can get around this but going forward i know im still gonna have problems,

my lecturer mentioned Logic Node the other day which apparently allows users to connect multiple macs together (FireWire) to share the CPU load when using Apple Logic,

has anyone heard of this sort of technique used for Max?

again thanks for your time,

there are VST plug-in which can do the audio-over-ethernet for you, those
could be the basis of a custom multi-computer application with one max
runtime on every computer (and one max/msp full version for the host)

for messages, udp/ip or OSC suggest some straightforward custom methods
to work with max patches on more than one computer.

thats an excellent idea,

thanks for all your suggestions guys,

much appreciated,

wouldn’t it be awesome if there was some sort of DSP sound card/interface that was dedicated to MaxMSP
