DualHead2Go tests

Hey List,

I just got the Matrox DualHead2Go box. Just ran it on my G5 (dual
2.7Ghz) through an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro (it’s supported for PC’s
only). The computer sees the box and gave me options in the displays
control panel to set it to 2048X768 for the 2 outs. It works! It
works great!!! Unexpectedly, the best results I had running 2048X768
res video clips were using DV codec. Photojpeg and others didn’t
work well at all (that could be something I did wrong, I don’t know)
I only used jit.qt.movie, with direct to window on, and it looks
fantastic. If ‘direct’ was off, it looks low-res. Not sure about
frame rate, but it’s faster than 30fps. I also ran some of
intensive OpenGL stuff across the 2 outs and it worked great,
framerates over 60fps. I going to pick up another one and see if I
can use them across both outs of the ATI card, giving 4 1024X768 outs
from 1 card. I’ve been waiting for this technology my whole life (at
least for this price point)

I’ve been considering this as well, though I was thrown off by several compatible laptop cards being listed, but not the specific one I have (ati mobility 9700). So I’ve been hoping a friend would pick one up so I could guinea pig it. If only you could have smaller output resolutions. I’d love a 1280×480 option. Still, I suppose if I’m just creating windows that are 640×480 and upscaling in OpenGL to the larger resolution… it might not make that big a difference. That’s good to know that it isn’t entirely driver dependent.

As far as DV Quality, you’re probably dealing with the "highquality" setting for quicktime. I was fooling with h264 files at high def resolutions, and the quality was poor until I forcibly enable highquality mode. However, it tanked my framerate. Your best bet with DV is probably to try and use UYUV mode to an OpenGL object then create your compositions with those. The nice thing is that since you’re only using one technical output, you don’t have to generate multiple render contexts/multiple render objects to get the two windows.

You’re probably right about the hq setting. I didn’t check that out
yet. I’ll play with other color modes to experiment, but right now,
for straight playback of clips on multiple monitors, it works great!
I just ordered another unit to test 2 working together. Imagine 4 of
these off of one machine! 8 Hires outputs at once. Kickass!
