Max user for 5 years, just getting into using it onstage recently. I have Max5 and a Macbook Pro 13″ from 2 years ago.

I want to perform some material live and use an MIDI drum set to do so. I know I could program Max to do what I need, but I have a few questions of you experts.

The piece needs video (not high quality) samples and sound samples cued from MIDI triggers on the drums. My interface in an RME FF800 and I’d route the MIDI through there.

1. Is it faster in any way to have a MIDI device plugged through the interface or via a separate USB? or are they the same?

2. I know I could make a synth with ~poly for what I need, but I have a feeling there’s an easier way, anybody know of free pre-made synth patches which I could just adjust. I need different key velocities attached to different samples…

3. Is there reason to think that the patch I described would be too intensive for my computer?

4. (biggest question) Would it matter how nice an e-drum kit I get considering I won’t be using the internal samples? Any recommendations?
