I'm controlling track sends using a live.object that has data sent to it from an automated dial (so I can have dynamic control surface asssignments depending on what track i select)

This works fine when Ableton is the front window, but if I have any floating M4L windows, the max window or even the ableton preferences in front of Abeton, the sends don't receive data smoothly from the live.object, giving all kinds of random errors that don't correspond to the dial feeding it. Why is this, and can I fix it?
