Externals

Howdy all,

How should one load externals into Max? Is it help files in help folder, then pat files in th patches folder, and the .dll in the max folder?

Also…

With Stefan Tiedjes’ externals I can’t find the .dll file, anyone know where it is hidden?

Thank you.;)

I think, Stefan Tiedjes released some abstractions and not externals.
So just put them in your search path and Max should find them without
a problem. Now I admit I am only assuming since I never used Max on
PC. But there’s no .dll for abstractions, is there ?

NB: have a look at the init folder if you want them to appear in the
max objects menu.

Talking about .dll, i assume you’re on windows. So :

There’s no “.dll”. The externals are .dll (shared library) with an .mxe
extension. If you mean the additionnal libraries (like mscv7x.dll and
such), they have to be in max folder, yes. The externals go to .Common
FilesCycling’74externals.

Yes that’s it. add your externals to the Max externals folder, or
best, create a folder to put your objects in somewhere on your HD and
add the path to that folder in the Max preference window.

In case of any doubt, check the Max Getting Started pdf. It should be
clearly stated there.

Max/Msp comes with the best documentation, tutorials an example of all
the sofwares I know. It’s probably time now to read them…

Max will for for files (abstractions, pictures, movies, sounds, coll,
etc.) in the search path. You can add some pathes using the File
Preferences… menu,. In this window, you’ll also find a “Print”
button, so you can have an idea about where Max will look for files.

externals folder and startup folder is obligation.

help files and frequently used patches can be put
anywhere in the search path.
they would even launch and load properly when
located relative to the mommy patcher.

No dll’s necessary, its just a collection of abstractions, you can open
them and see how its done.
Though I do have a XP machine somewhere around, I hardly use it. Please
let me know if there are problems with running my collection on Windows.
A new release is in the pipeline… I can throw in some bugfixes if
necessary. (Applies also for the Mac version)
