How hard would it be to add an auto-backup feature? IE, max saves a backup of your currently open patches, every 5-10 minutes or so.

Obviously by now I really should have learned to save more regularly, but sometimes I’ll either get into a groove of patching and forget to save, or more often, i’ll be trying out some complex chain of thought and not want to save over my old patch until I’m sure it works. And then, invariably, I crash, losing a good deal of work.

Almost every patch I’ve got has about 10 versions, patch_1 patch_2 etc. good old Save As… works for me, but then there’s a lot of clutter.

I know what you mean about trying something potentially “dangerous” before wanting to save over the old version. The thing to do is to save before you attach that one cord, since there’s always one (maybe more) which are the potentially crash-able connections.

Crashes based upon copy/paste, presentation mode, etc., of course you can’t do much about. My experience has been fine with these, no problems (XP). I get crashes with multislider size/list-length commands sometimes; jit.gl.mesh has also been problematic, and I don’t think I’m doing anything particularly strange with it. Ah well.

I also noticed that upon a crash, the Open Recent list will have reverted to a much earlier state.

Oh, I’m on the 26th or so saved version of the patch I’m working on. The thing is that I don’t want to have to keep track of a lot of branching versions as I try things out. And it’s not necessarily ‘dangerous’ things, either, just things that I won’t be sure if they solve what I need them to until I try them out. Last night, I was halfway through figuring out how to massage a list into the form I needed it, when I crashed while switching to presentation mode. I got a screenshot of what I’d been doing before it crashed, but I still lost about an hours worth of work, and had to go get it all set up again.

I’m not saying that it’s not worth it to get more into the habit of saving often, but that sometimes crashes are so unexpected that you really, really wish you had a backup.

I mean, I can’t be expected to save every time I plan to switch to presentation mode, right?

[metro 300 000]
[thispatcher]

you have to give the name and folder the 1st time but then your fine. It will save in the same path every 5min.

I once spend 3 hours on an intense patch which I was saving quite a bit. But in the beginning I had done a faulty connection which had caused an overload. Anyways, I don,t know if it’s like that for everyone, but for me if I choose to resume (cmd r) any work following this will not be save. So I always restart max instead of resuming.

or use this simple patch above and all is fine.

I’m w. you on that feature MuShoo

Hey, Max is not made by Microschuft or Adoome or Dizzydesign. You can do
something about it. Its called bug report. There are bug reporting
guidelines out, which mainly tell you to mention your system, versions,
get a patch if applicable etc to replicate the case…
It is sometimes hard to find repeatable conditions, but still, Cycling
is the one company which takes these problems serious and tries its best
to fix them.
I would welcome an automated backup system implemented too (but it isn’t
the highest priority for me). Here is why it might be difficult to
implement: Max isn’t a workstation kind of program, at least I have
multiple subpatchers open at the same time and might make changes in all
of them. Max is based on search paths and alike, all these backups would
have to be outside of it and to how many files would you limit it? per
patcher?, all together? how long should they survive? It has to be
designed…
My strategy is simply to duplicate my patch in the finder if I am about
to do bigger/dangerous modifications, this takes a fraction of a second
(much faster than save as, as it creates a name automatically). I have
to delete those duplicates by hand though…

As far as I know, this is a request, which probably is noted already and
might show up one time…

Btw. I patch a lot, but I have only occasional crashes. If I can track
down the conditions and report it, these are usually fixed within days
or even hours, though you might have to wait till the next release to
move the fix to your computer…

Crashes can have a lot of reasons, not all of them are in the
responsibility of C74. If its an OS problem, you still need to find the
conditions, to be able to find strategies against it.

Maybe just send this screenshot to support@cycling74.com along with
system information and as much what you did before. I think its worth to
investigate if Max is crashing just by switching to presentation mode.
That issue should be fixed…
If its on a Mac, you can also send the crash report…

On the other hand, there is no need to do that switch, just open another
view of your patch, and leave it in presentation mode, that way you can
immediately see the changes, test and patch at the same time…

Maybe that helps until a fix is on the way…

That is very true, I spoke too soon. We as users push the program (often unwittingly) into all kinds of directions which could be difficult to test for during development, at least exhaustively. These cause unforeseen errors in Max or in the OS, or in some combination, or involving some other program that’s running… it definitely can be complex, and I’m sure I don’t know the half of it.

When Max (XP) crashes and you get the Error Report thing for Microsoft, that information will get back to Cycling too, right?

On 4.6 often times I’d get a crash with no error message—it was just like bam, desktop, max disappeared. In a case like that, anyone know where to get the error log?

Since 5, I get the error box consistently upon a crash.

I doubt it, or did you ever get a personal answer if there was a problem
with Windows and you dared to ask? Maybe if you pay extra… ;-)

in addition to this I also keep each project 100% contained in a folder,
(i.e. with copies of all the abstractions and extra externals required).
This folder can then be quickly zipped up as an archive, which again is auto
named with version number. This way there is no risk of Max finding and
loading an older version of a patch, and having everything needed for a
project all in one place has many benefits – even though it does mean there
are dozens of copies of some utility patches and 3rd party externals.

Here’s my little solution to the autosave dilemma.

Just save the following patch into your clippings folder, and then paste it into each and every new patch. It’s basically the same as phil hughes’ earlier suggestion, but handier.

It’s saved me countless hours of lost time.

because Max does crash…

…occasionally.
