File Browser ??

Hi!

There are some way to build a "file Browser", so i can drag files in "full screen mode".

it can be done with the LCD object, but it demands very confusing programming and is not very well suited for general purpose... check out Topher LaFata's filebrowse mxj, which can be modified to drag 'n' drop ,- i did it using Tim Place's 'hover' object...

That said,- i really hope that cycling will make a nice filebrowsing gui object for max 5.0, which is expected in nMonths.... it's a real fucking drag, that no such thing exists...

--- i know u can build a filebrowser with jit.cellblock or the LCD object,- i did, but if cycling dosen't bother building a configurable filebrowser gui, then at least a drag object ? U could send the object a filepath and drag the file to other places in max, back to finder or another program (like a sequencer)

this would also allow us to make pluggos capable of dragging stuff (like midifiles) directly to the host ;)

please cycling, i really think not being able to do this is a major shortcomming of the max environment --- if this is already possible in some way,- please share your wisdom !!

I have drag and drop jsui on my computer. ask very very nicely. and
I'll clean it up and post it(some time this week)

max is a programming language not a lego set. you don't have custom
build pieces for all your needs. that being said, it is a desirable
functionality.

Hi Matthew

pretty please with sugar on,- can i have the filebrowse jsui... can u drag to the dropfile with it ?

anyway i would love to check it out ;) until cycling or someone else makes something really good,- like the ableton filebrowser,- emagine having that as a gui object !! i would always have it sitting on the left side of my screen ! why bother with the finder... i'm interested in all workarounds, my own is not the most elegant i've ever seen +it's broken after my switch to IntelMac because it relies on Timothy Place's Hover Object ;)

btw, i do think of the max environment as something in between lego and a programming language... max is sort of advanced programming lego :P

Well, there is an example file browser built with iCE tools. It uses
ice.lattice and Bill Orcutt's Shell external. The downloadable demo
includes a standalone app you can play with without having iCE tools
installed. .

I _think_ this is the sort of thing you're looking for.

Best, Peter

there is a filebrowser done by Topher LaFata

Peter,- i'm looking forward to trying the ICE browser, just waiting for the universal binary version...

my own drag 'n' drop , is based on Tophers filebrowse & Timothy Place's Hover, but is, as mentioned not exactly elegant.... a C written gui, is the thing i'm asking for (maybe a very nice jsui or java could do it,- i'm not the one to ask there, but i haven't seen what i wish for)... and filp it how you wan't - there is curently no easy way (if any) to drag files from max to another program.... which would be a fantastic feature !!

matthew,- i would still love to see your JSUI, i've seen nice JSUI's from you ;)

i think we need a filebrowser, with all the features,- excluding filetypes, favorit folders, audio prelisten, patch launching, dragging, etc... go Max 5.0 !!!

A generalized hierarchy browser would be a lot more useful. Most of
that other stuff can be implemented painlessly given the right outlet data.

Here's a pedagogic one (for me first !) ...

Max Patch
Copy patch and select New From Clipboard in Max.
