firewire cameras through belkins express card adaptor

February 27, 2008 | 12:57 am

Hi,

I’m new (still) and drowning ;)

I’m attempting to get two daisychained unibrain firewire cameras to be recognized by jitter but no luck. The only thing I can think of that could be the cause is that they are going through a Belkins Firewire Expresscard Adaptor via pci-slot (my pc laptop only has a 4pin firewire adaptor, so I use this for the 6 pin) and maybe that’s why it’s not recognized? Doesn’t seem to affect my soundcard though. Thing is I really want to connect this way if possible as it’s much more secure, the 4pin easily pops out if you nudge it…not good during performances.

The camera’s are recognized by my computer elsewhere though. Am I missing something terribly obvious?

Thanks,

Bill

ps running windows xp home, on one year old laptop, 2 gig ram, 2.33 gighrz, running max/msp 4.6.3 and jitter 1.6.2.

Hey Bill,

Are they powered? You need 6 pins for power if the belkin doesnt
supply power you need an adapter for the cameras.

yeah, figured that much…bit of an update..got em powered with an adaptor, so that’s ok. they do get recognized sort of.

when i open jit tutorial no. 23 (FWControl) max doesn’t find any av devices…but in the sequencegrabber (tut21) i can find them. tho, too much switching between cameras causes max to crash.

what i want to do is so simple, i know, but getting max stable with the cameras is killing me.

one seriously ‘newbie’ question would be: is there a problem having multiple instances of jit.dx.grab within a single patch (i’m trying to just make a mixer to fade in the three cameras)…seems to crash max.

thanks…errr, i hate being so new.
