Folder object: maximum fileName length

July 18, 2009 | 3:44 pm

Hello everybody,

I’ve experienced an strange behavior while using folder object. Its output sometimes changes file names. It is related to the length of the file names I’m using.
I would like to know which available tricks can i use to skip the issue without changing the names of the files.

here is an example:

my files:

01_Prolog__1.0___Butterflies.wav
02_Prolog__2.0___Grasshoppe.wav
03_Prolog__3.0___PartyMusic.wav
04_Prolog__4.0___Pianomusic.wav
05_Prolog__5.0___Clouddrizz.wav
06_Prolog__7.0___Person.wav
07_Prolog__8.0___Fireflies.wav
08_Scn1__4.0___BookDrop.wav
09_Scn1__2.2___BookDrop.wav
10_Scn1__2.2___BookDrop.wav
11_Scn2Act1__1.0___CitySounds.wav
12_Scn2Act1__1.0___CitySounds.wav
13_Scn3__4.0___BookDrop.wav
14_Scn3__2.2___BookDrop.wav
15_Scn3__2.2___BookDrop.wav
16_Scn4Act1__1.0___CitySounds.wav

folder output:
print: clear
print: append 01_Prolog__1.0___But#48368F.wav
print: append 02_Prolog__2.0___Grasshoppe.wav
print: append 03_Prolog__3.0___PartyMusic.wav
print: append 04_Prolog__4.0___Pianomusic.wav
print: append 05_Prolog__5.0___Clouddrizz.wav
print: append 06_Prolog__7.0___Person.wav
print: append 07_Prolog__8.0___Fireflies.wav
print: append 08_Scn1__4.0___BookDrop.wav
print: append 09_Scn1__2.2___BookDrop.wav
print: append 10_Scn1__2.3___BookDrop.wav
print: append 11_Scn2Act1__1.0___C#483699.wav
print: append 12_Scn2Act1__1.1___C#48369A.wav
print: append 13_Scn3__4.0___BookDrop.wav
print: append 14_Scn3__2.2___BookDrop.wav
print: append 15_Scn3__2.2___BookDrop.wav
print: append 16_Scn4Act1__1.0___C#48369E.wav

Thanks a lot!

upgrade to max 5, or use a windows machine.

another option is to use something like the ‘ls’ command to the shell object. it should keep the filenames. you can keep two umenus, one with the long names and one with the truncated max names.

best option is to upgrade to 5.

then..
Any chance to get Ambisonics working in max 5?
I will have a look at shell now.. let’s see how hard it is.

Thanks for the reply robtherich!

best option is to upgrade to 5.

best option is not to use long names on OSX, as maxmsp isnt
the only program which truncates filenames.
