I'm working a lot with MaxMSP-synths that intentionally extends the Nyquist frequency and folds down - to make really strange sonic moods.

Right now I'm just using the DSP Status Sampling Rate (on my system: 44.1, 48 or 96 kHz) to do this. I'm wondering if it's possible to either:

1) Get other frequencies than these in the DSP Status?

2) Or even better: Keep the overall Sampling Rate on e.g. 44.1kHz and then make some patching that emulates a lower sampling rate (maybe even so the sampling rate / Nyquist frequency can be manipulated real time)?

I've would very much like to experiment in folding the human voice down - e.g. with a Nyquist frequency on 1kHz... any one who has tried anything like that? :-)

better for folding the spectrum is fft, perfect would be resynthesis.

However it sounds a bit digitally harsh - more than I expected. But then again it is a highly digital procedure. I tried some low pass filtering - any other suggestions to make it sound 'natural' (just a flipped spectrum - not the digital distortion)?
