Forum double-posting errors .. please read

December 26, 2006 | 8:38 pm

Hi Folks

Since I am unable to re-create the forum double-posting problem, I was wondering if those of you who have experienced the problem could please post here what browser and operating system you are using when you experienced the error.

Frankly I’m mystified as to why it started happening all of a sudden in the last month or two, and why there aren’t any other reported instances of it on the fudforum.org support forums.

I’ve heard Safari mentioned most times — has anyone experienced the posting error when using Firefox, IE, Opera, etc. ?

thx

Using:
IE verion 6.0.2800, WinXP home edition sp1

Two things have happened:
1. I get a message when I press "submit reply" which says something akin to " …there was an error when…" at which time I posted again and saw that it was listed twice, so I started ignoring the message. (Since, as right now, the forum options inform me that the Editing Time Limit is 1 minute, I surmise that this might be the problem.)

2. Two days ago, in answer to another post which appeared 3 times, I got no error message but my post also appeared 3 times.

Good luck, and thanks for the effort!

I have had the error message only once, "there has been an error, blah blah, reload to try again…".
Have posted many times before and after with no problem.

OS 10.4.8 and firefox v2. max was probably running in the background too…

The editing time has been changed to several different values over the
last week. The error seems to occur no matter what this value is set to.
Since I am unable to completely disable post editing, it is set to one
minute to discourage post editing. I don’t think the editing time limit
has anything to do with it.

I believe that I experienced the error yesterday. I submitted a post and was given an error message and told to refresh my browser. Thinking that this could perhaps be what was causing other double (triple) posts I checked the forum in a new window before refreshing. Sure enough my post was there in spite of the error. Hope this is worthwhile information.

Firefox 1.5.0.8
Mac OSX.3.9

Internet Explorer 5 OS 9
Internet Explorer 6 OS X

1.
it usually happens when you write, post, send, and
then press the back button and the forward button again.
(i say usually because i know it from other forum systems
too, which is why it rarely happens to me here.

2.
it also happens that people sometimes get an error page
("coundnt connect to the database", which is nothing serious
as you know), and so people think their post wasnt sent – and
they try again.
but in fact it already was posted the first time despite the
error page.

3.
some idiots keep forgetting what they posted 2 minutes ago
and post exactyl the same message again. (very rare case)

btw, it would be awesome if there would be a delay from
forum to mail list – so that one could edit or delete
postings within the first 3 minutes.

just wouldn’t let me post at all. nothing happened. for the whole week
i was at her house :) and that was sad cause i was trying to spend
that time working on a project.it never gave me an error messege. just
timmed out evry single time. i thought it was somthing to do with our
connection, but now you guys are having these problems so i just
thought i’d post this.

I’ve experienced it with IE 7, XP service pack 2 (fully updated). It happens with me when i take too long to post, (over 15 minutes), and then get the dreaded error message other people have referred to.

Of course to post twice, i actually have to refresh the page at the error message…which i’ve since stopped doing, although i can understand why people do because after writing an excessively long message, (the type that takes you over the limit), it’s slightly worrying to think that it hasn’t posted when you get the error and you’ll have to start over!

It does actually post the message to the board though, despite giving an error message, and since i’ve realised this i’ve stopped refreshing the page when i see the error…and to my knowledge i haven’t double posted since.

Hope that helps you to understand/replicate it.
John

Ps: I haven’t actually seen the error page for a while but i vaguely recall it actually tells you to refresh your browser, (which is presumably what gave me the idea to start doing it).

maybe, robin, because it is hard to find out what
sometimes happens when posting after 10 posts? :)

maybe i was referring to the many posts i’ve made with my 13 other aliases.
