frequency/amp detection –> sample triggering

Hey all,

This is my first post in the forum. I’m a student at the University of Michigan, working in electronic music. I’m very new to Max/MSP, but here’s my idea… Create a patch with a microphone input that takes in audio and uses its frequency content/amplitude to trigger samples. For example, if i make a high pitched clicking sound with my mouth, it would trigger a snare sample. A lower pitched noise would trigger a kick drum sample. This would basically allow a person to “play the
drums” using just their mouth, freeing up the rest of their limbs for other things (actual drums, vibes, bells, guitar, whatever). I think this is do-able, but I’m not sure how to get started. Wanna recommend some objects/design ideas?

thanks,
Ryan Lundin

adc~ object, build a sampler, fiddle~ (3rd party external).

the tutorials will be invaluable to you in terms of getting you some info to spring from.

triggering samples based on freq data is going to require polling at a certain rate, but i’ll leave that up to you; after you’ve read the manual (which recommends numerous design ideas) you should be fine.

fiddle~ can do frequency detection

you can look at maxobjects.com for more frequency detection objects,
like analyzer~ etc
